A Labour Card, also known as a work permit, is an inevitable document for expatriate employees in Dubai. Issued by the Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation (MOHRE), the Labour Card permits foreign nationals to work legally in Dubai.
The employer is responsible for initiating the application process for the labour card for an employee. Employees should also undergo a medical examination and apply for Emirates ID to proceed with a Labour Card application.
Once the authorities approve the request for a Labour Card, it is issued and linked to the employee’s residency visa. The validity varies between 2-3 years, depending on the employment contract.
The employer and the employee will have to repeat the procedures every time they go for Labour Card Renewal. The employee must undergo a fresh medical examination and submit a new employment contract and other documents.
Every foreign worker should possess a valid Labour Card to work or stay in Dubai. It also helps the employees to maintain legal employment status, avail the rights of the employee and uphold their obligations.
